Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
“Come thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy praise.
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount, I’m fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love.”
—Robert Robinson—1758
Let the Amen Collection
This has been one of my favorite hymns for many years. I love how the beautiful lyrics in this song teach our hearts how good and beautiful God is. The song is a plead to keep us from straying (since our hearts can be “prone to wander”)
I decided to depict a piano in this piece—mainly because of the line “Tune my heart to sing Thy grace”, but also because I personally love playing piano as a way of expressing worship to God.
I decided to depict some of the song’s images above the piano– there are pictures hanging on the wall in this painting meant to represent some of the other lines in this first verse—
“Streams of mercy” is represented by the rays of sun picture, “Call for songs of loudest praise” is represented by the picture frames of the treble clef and the hand lifted up, “sung by flaming tongues above” is represented by the flames, “praise the mount” is represented with the mountains, “thy redeeming love” by the heart.
This hymn is full of such rich imagery, including the reference to the Ebenezer stone (a reference to the story of when Samuel set up a stone and called it the “Stone of help” in worship to God for helping the Israelites defeat the Philistines in Mizpah (1 Samuel 7:12).
May this hymn be a constant prayer to let the spirit continue fine-tuning our hearts to sing His praise.
