How Great Thou Art
“O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to thee,
How great thou art, How great thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to thee,
How great thou art, How great thou art!”
— Carl Boberg, 1886, translated to English in 1920’s by Rev. and Mrs. Stuart K. Hine
One thing that continues to strike awe in me is mighty thunderstorms.
Where we live, the thunder can be fiercely loud, and the lightening so intense and bright. This song talks about the fierce strength nature can sometimes be, and how it is a display of God’s power throughout the universe.
He displays his power, his glory, his grace, his love—all around us.
May we have eyes to see, and ears to hear the rolling thunder and know “How great” He is.
